Topical Keratolytics
What are topical keratolytics?
Topical keratolytics are agents designed to chemically exfoliate the skin's outermost layer. These medicines are particularly effective for conditions characterized by excessive accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin surface, such as dry skin, keratosis pilaris, ichthyosis, and psoriasis. Unlike physical exfoliation methods, which can be harsh and irritate the skin, topical keratolytics like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and urea offer a gentler, more sustainable solution for long-term use.
What are possible side effects of topical keratolytics?
Given their acidic nature, some topical keratolytics may induce mild burning sensations upon application. This sensation usually subsides as the skin condition improves. If the irritation persists, consult your healthcare provider. Additionally, these medications can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight in the treated areas, so consistent use of sunscreen is advised.
How are topical keratolytics used?
These agents typically come in the form of creams or lotions. For optimal effectiveness, it's recommended to apply the product within three minutes of exiting the shower and drying off. If desired, a regular moisturizer can be applied over the medication. Some topical keratolytics are also available as washes or shampoos for use during showering.
